Children’s Emergency and Outpatient Services
Children’s Emergency and Outpatient Services Department is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. A dedicated Team of Children’s doctors do three shifts in a day to cover Children’s Emergency and Outpatient Services.
Triaging of sick children that present to the Children’s Emergency Department helps categorize them into five categories, hence the level of urgency to serve them is worked out.
Five-Level Paediatric Triage System
Life-threatening.
Could become life-threatening.
Not life-threatening.
Not life-threatening.
Needs treatment when time permits.
Children who fall into Category 1-3 are attended to as and when they present. They are resuscitated and stabilised. Category 4 & 5 would be attended to once children presenting with life-threatening or emergency conditions are sorted.
In the Children’s Emergency Department children are assessed; tests and treatment are instituted accordingly depending on the presenting problem. Those that need admission are admitted, those that need monitoring are kept for observations and those not so sick are sent home on treatment and advice to review if parents are worried or concerned.
Children’s Emergency Department also receives patients referred in from provincial and private hospitals around the country and clinics in NCD. Children who have been referred in for further tests and management get assessed here and admitted when required.
Paediatric Consultation Clinics
Consultation clinics are scheduled from Monday to Friday. Paediatricians run the following clinics for children who have been discharged from the wards or referred in from other health facilities.
Duration of follow-up in the clinics is dependent on childhood conditions and the plan of management on follow-up is often discussed with parents.
Inpatient Services
In-patient services include acute care and management of very sick children with any condition. Common causes of admissions to the Children’s Wards include Neonatal Conditions, Pneumonia, Meningitis, Tuberculosis, Malnutrition, Diarrhoea & HIV.
Admitted sick children are worked up and managed accordingly, including parents or carers being informed of their child’s conditions. Children who are admitted are stabilised and managed accordingly.
Cardiac Care
Children with heart diseases requiring closed heart surgery (PDA ligation) are worked up for surgery as and when they present.
Open Heart Surgery
Children for open heart surgeries are worked up and taken care of post-surgery. Open heart surgery is done with the OHI visits.
Children’s Cancer Care
Children with Cancer are admitted to the Children’s Cancer ward for workup and chemotherapy which can take up to several months for children referred in from other centres.
Special Care Nursery & Newborn Services
Newborn babies with Neonatal Infections and other Neonatal Conditions are managed accordingly. The Special Care Nursery admits babies up to a week of age with Prematurity, Low Birth Weight, Infections, Severe Birth Asphyxia and other Neonatal Conditions and also looks after sick babies in the post-natal ward and labour ward.

Fees are subject to change. Doing paediatric cases requires delicate attention to detail and the long-term effects are detrimental either in a good sense or bad sense. These prices are based on the amount of time it consumes, the attention to detail that is warranted, and the consequences thereof.
These fees are specifically for the surgeons and do not include other fees such as meals, electricity, water bills and nursing fees.
The various minor procedures that are done in the wards and clinics are not captured here but may be added if warranted.
