Dermatology Services at Port Moresby General Hospital
Basic Dermatology services at Port Moresby General Hospital are provided by the Dermatology (Skin) Clinic located amongst other Consultation Clinics on Level 2 of JICA Wing.
It is a small two-cubical clinic situated between the Eye Clinic and the ENT Clinic and operates five (5) days a week from Mondays to Fridays.
SPECIALIZED SKIN CARE
More Than Dermatology
Apart from dermatological problems, the Clinic also operates as the Leprosy Clinic. All new or suspected Leprosy cases from within the National Capital District and Central Province are referred here for confirmation and management.
Certain sexually transmitted infections and other Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), such as Yaws and Buruli Ulcers, are also managed in this clinic.

REFERRAL INFORMATION
Consultation-Only Clinic
The Dermatology Clinic operates as a “Consultation-only” Clinic and only patients that are referred from other Health Facilities or Hospitals are entertained.
Other sources of referral include General Practitioners and Private Hospitals.
Patients with dermatological problems who are already admitted to Port Moresby General Hospital may also be referred from the wards and other Consultation Clinics within PMGH as “Ward or Clinic Consults”.
NATIONAL REFERRAL SERVICE
Serving Patients Across Papua New Guinea
The majority of patients accessing dermatological services at this Clinic come from within the National Capital District. However, a good number of skin patients also come from the neighbouring Provinces of Central and Gulf.
As the Port Moresby General Hospital’s Dermatology Clinic is the only recognized clinic that provides dermatological services in the whole of Papua New Guinea, patients are also referred from other provinces in the country.

Clinical diagnosis, investigation and treatment of all dermatological conditions.
Leprosy Services
Diagnosis and treatment of Leprosy and management of Leprosy-related complications.
STI & NTD Services
Diagnosis, investigation and treatment of some Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).
Dermatological Procedures
Dermatological procedures including skin biopsies, excisions, intra-lesional steroid injections and slit skin smears.
Supervisory Visits
Providing supervisory visits and, in the case of Leprosy, contact-tracing activities.
LOOKING AHEAD
Expanding Dermatology Services
The size of the Dermatology Clinic is currently a limiting factor. The clinic is small and crammed, and a bigger space would provide an opportunity to upgrade the clinic and expand its services.
With a larger facility and appropriate equipment, the Clinic hopes to provide additional Dermatology services such as Cryotherapy, Phototherapy, Patch Testing and Laser services.
